This past week while hanging at a friends house my wife and I decided our front living room walls could use an update. While at our their home we noticed some hanging tiles with their names in scrabble block format (they bought their letters). After seeing this my wife and I decided we had to do it, and that it would be relatively simple since we had a Cricut machine.
So we ordered square blocks from Amazon and broke out our Cricut machine. We noticed this was a pretty common craft after searching google for scrabble letter points.
Without further ado here is how to make Scrabble Name Wall Decor.
- 5″ Square Blocks (enough for family names, and a few extra)
- Minwax Gel Stain (if you plan to change the color)
- Disposable Foam Paint Brush
- Rubber Gloves
- Cotton cloth or old T-Shirt for applying the stain
- Cricut or Silhouette machine
- 3M Velcro Strips (easiest way to hang and adjust)
- Cardboard box to put your times on top of while applying stain
- 4 Foot Level
Using your foam brush apply a generous amount of stain to the top of the square block, make sure its enough to cover. It’s okay if you put to much on, you can just apply it to the next tile.
With your cotton cloth rub the stain on your blocks, using a left to right motion going with the wood grain, do this with as many blocks you can fit on your cardboard. Set aside to dry (2-3 hours).
DAD TIP: Don’t forget the edges, as you don;t want them to show the original wood color when they are hanging.
While waiting for the stain to dry go into your Cricut design studio to create and print your scrabble letters. To find a design you like, you can use a site like Puzzle Fast to help you. You can put in your family names and have it make several previews to help decide the layout.
This step is not required; however, I wanted the whole block covered. Once the wood has dried, flip over and repeat the process. Your finished block should dry nice and look like the image below.
Next Layout your design, and overlay the letters to ensure it’s up to your liking. Remove vynil backing and apply letters to each tile.
Finally, attach the 3M velcro picture hanging backing and apply to your squares, and hang them on the wall.
DAD TIP: Use your level to ensure they are as level as possible.
Step back and enjoy.
